Description

Wood Commissioning is recruiting for an experienced Balance of Plant (BoP) Commissioning Engineer to support EDF at Hinkley Point C (HPC). Ideally based locally to the Bridgwater area, the successful candidate will be engaged on a 12 month rolling PAYE contract working 40 hrs/wk Monday to Friday at HPC Site Office in Bridgwater.

The Role

The Balance of Plant Commissioning Engineer’s role will evolve during the lifecycle of the project and combine technical knowledge with project delivery skills. At the early stages you will contribute to detailed planning and preparation, including reviewing contractor-produced commissioning documentation. Following this, you will execute commissioning tests and conduct surveillance on contractor-led activities as part of a team and analyse the results to justify the readiness of the HPC units to safely enter commercial operation. 

As a Commissioning Engineer you will be responsible for the delivery of test specifications and safety documentation during preparation for commissioning. You will perform site testing safely and effectively, assist with the analysis of commissioning results, resolve problems and take responsibility for ensuring that deliverables supporting HPC commissioning are provided on time, in accordance with the Project’s requirements. This will include giving support to contract partners and taking part in contractual review and acceptance activities

Hinkley Point C (HPC) is a major infrastructure project encompassing the design, construction and commissioning of two European Pressure Reactors (EPR’s) in the South-West of England. 

The Project is of significant importance to the UK’s future energy requirements, being the first to be built in the UK for over 25 years and is designed to operate for 60 years. When in operation it will deliver circa 3,260MW of secure low carbon energy to the UK energy network, which is enough energy to power approximately 6 million UK homes. The Project also represents a significant investment in the UK nuclear industry and the related technical supply chains. 

Hinkley Point C is a vital part of the UK’s future energy strategy. As the first of the UK’s next generation of Nuclear power stations, HPC is both of high profile and high complexity. The HPC Commissioning Team is expanding in preparation for the commissioning of Hinkley Point C, the first nuclear power station to be built in a generation. 



Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Accountable to a Commissioning Manager in the NNB HPC Project team
  • Develop commissioning documentation and review contractor-produced documentation relating to commissioning testing
  • Contribute to detailed planning and take ownership of a programme of tests
  • Take part in or lead the execution of site commissioning activities which may include supervision of contractor personnel to achieve safe commissioning of HPC systems
  • Provide information to assist the Commissioning Manager in meeting project-level objectives and milestones
  • Analyse commissioning results and provide reports on the outcome of tests


Qualifications

  • HNC qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering Discipline. Degree qualified desirable
  • Strong technical knowledge of Mechanical & Process Systems 
  • Strong technical engineering skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills and the ability to convey complex information to others
  • Able to work as part of a team and work closely with contractors 
  • Delivery focus – either a track record of delivery or a delivery mind-set  
  • Demonstrable history of working within safety and quality cultures
